Work backwards from handback. Reserve time for reviewing captured indications, place observation after the system has a usable pressure condition, and place access release before observation. A point that cannot enter this chain moves to a later check or different method. This critical-path test, rather than a generic scoping checklist, decides whether hazardous-area gas checks fit the window.

A useful post-shutdown gas leak testing enquiry begins with the plant condition that needs to be observed, not a request to “check the area”. The recipient needs to understand which repaired or reinstated components matter, when they will be in the relevant process state, where they can be viewed and what evidence the maintenance team needs back.

That information does not prescribe the survey method or guarantee that a proposed window is workable. It makes the request specific enough for the published post-shutdown gas leak testing route to be considered against a real workfront.

Work backwards from the release time

Start with the maintenance event. A flange may have been remade, a valve replaced, a connection disturbed or a section returned to pressure after planned work. Identify the affected equipment and the reason it is in the request. This is more useful than submitting a broad unit or area name because the service question is tied to the components that changed.

Separate the required points from optional extensions. A required list might contain the disturbed flange pair, the valve packing area and two instrument connections. Nearby equipment can be listed separately if there is a reason to consider it. This distinction prevents a bounded return-to-service observation from quietly becoming an undefined area survey.

For each required point, provide:

  • the asset tag and component description;
  • the work completed or condition changed;
  • the gas or process context available to the site;
  • the process state expected during the observation;
  • the side, level or platform from which the point can be seen; and
  • the image, video, location note or quantified output being requested.

These fields allow the commercial enquiry to be reviewed without inventing a duration, acceptance criterion or site method.

Reserve the pressure-dependent observation window

“After shutdown” can refer to several very different moments. Equipment may be isolated, undergoing reinstatement, newly pressurised or operating at a stable state. State the condition in which an observation is sought and who controls the release of that workfront under the site’s arrangements.

Include any sequence dependency. If a point becomes available only after insulation is replaced, a guard is removed or another team finishes work, say so. If the required process condition occurs only during a defined part of the restart sequence, identify that window without assuming a service can be delivered inside it.

The proposed observation also needs a clear end boundary. Access may close when scaffolding is struck, a temporary barrier moves, hot work begins nearby or the equipment state changes. Supplying the earliest realistic access time and the latest useful finish time is more informative than supplying the shutdown booking alone.

Split preparation from live observation

Ultrasound imaging localises a sound source and superimposes it on an optical image. The Distran ultrasound-imaging technology explains how phase differences across the sensor array are used to reconstruct the spatial origin of an ultrasonic signal. That makes the actual viewing position part of the evidence.

Mark known restrictions before the enquiry is sent. Pipework, shielding, insulation, temporary works and elevation can conceal a nominated connection even when the wider area is accessible. A simple point list can use “clear view”, “partial view”, “view expected after work” and “view unknown” to show the current position.

Do not treat an alternative view as equivalent by default. If the planned south-platform view is unavailable but a west-side position remains open, identify both. The service discussion can then address the workfront that actually exists rather than relying on a general statement that access will be available.

Clear the location gate before mobilisation

Where a location is classified, include the site’s area information and the requirement that applies to the proposed task. Product-family language is not a substitute for checking the actual unit, marking and location together. The Ultra Pro X hazardous-area information identifies ATEX and IECEx certification for Zone 2, Gas Group IIC, but site acceptance still depends on the current equipment documentation and the responsible site process. The Ultra Pro Max acoustic imaging product is a separate handheld route and its published features should not be transferred to Ultra Pro X.

This question belongs before the workfront opens. Leaving it unresolved can consume the only useful observation period. It should remain separate from the technical purpose of the check: one question concerns whether the proposed equipment can be considered for the location, while the other concerns the repaired components and required evidence.

Choose the smallest output that closes the work order

Ask for the evidence the maintenance decision genuinely needs. A component-level image or video record answers a different job from a quantified result. If quantified information is required, say so in the enquiry rather than assuming it is included because acoustic imaging is involved.

Use the same component names in the work list and the requested output. An entry such as “P-204 discharge flange, east side, reinstated after gasket change, stable operating state, image and location reference required” is far more reviewable than “pump area completed”. It makes omissions visible and keeps any returned evidence attached to the changed component.

Where several workfronts are released in sequence, group the points by release rather than sending one undifferentiated list. This reveals whether the request involves one continuous route or several separate mobilisation opportunities. It also makes it possible to state which group is essential if the available interval changes.

Keep the service enquiry bounded

The published on-site gas leak detection and quantification service includes post-shutdown gas leak detection testing using a handheld Distran device. A sound enquiry identifies the component groups, process condition, viewing positions, area information and required output so the booked work has a defined boundary.

A compact worked brief might read: “Unit 2 compressor discharge, six disturbed connections across two elevations; expected stable process state from 14:00 to 16:00; north platform unavailable; Zone 2 location information attached; component-level image references required, with quantification requested for any located source.” It conveys scope without promising completion or deciding the field method.

Keep unresolved items visible. Missing area information, an uncertain release time or a concealed point should be stated as an open input because each can change the feasible service window.

Release the window without hiding residue

The workfront can be released only against the component list and observation status, not against elapsed shutdown time. Separate completed accessible points from concealed components and positions that could not be occupied.

Release time alone is not a sufficient brief. Separate accessible points from concealed ones, and attach every concealed component to a named return condition; workfront release does not turn it into an observed location.

Close the maintenance window by recording what the available observation did cover and carrying every concealed component or unavailable position into a named return condition. Release of the workfront does not convert those locations into checked points.
